Art is not just for professional artists – it’s for everybody! Each of us has the ability to use art as a means of self-expression and a way to enrich the world with new visions and artistic creations. But it may be challenging to find time for art in a fast-paced world where we are constantly on the go and children are often overscheduled and overstimulated. For Thomas – a 9-year-old boy from Bucharest (Romania), nevertheless, drawing has become a source of joy, relaxation, and self-discovery, as he loves to use his imagination to discover his inner world and the world around him. Let us meet Thomas!
Drawing as a Passion
From investigating nature and animal life to envisioning the vastness of outer space, Thomas’s art reflects his curiosity and desire to understand the world. And through his art, Thomas has also improved his ability to overcome challenges and express his ideas and emotions better.

Thomas shares that drawing is one of his interests because it brings him a sense of joy and fulfillment. “I like to draw because it makes me feel good, relaxes me, and helps me express my ideas easily. Besides, drawing is one of my passions.”
His insatiable curiosity and love for nature play a big part in his creative process and he finds inspiration for his drawing in almost everything. “I am inspired by nature, by animal life, by studying dinosaurs, life on earth and in space,” he says.

Overcoming Challenges
During his artistic adventures, Thomas encountered his fair share of difficulties, just like anybody else who has ever attempted to create some form of art. But using his vivid imagination and the stories he made up in his head, he overcame them.
“The hardest thing to draw were the comic series, but I managed to make them because I used my imagination and I helped myself with the texts and the stories I had in my head”, Thomas recalls.

Thomas narrates a personal tale about a chalk drawing he made that tells a story and embodies the values that matter to him the most: love, family ties, and hope.
“I made a chalk drawing for my mother on a dark paper background, representing a sky with stars in the shape of shining hearts. The back story is about love and hope, about the things that matter most”, he shares.

The Artistic Process
Since Thomas enjoys trying out new and varied styles, techniques, and mediums and even combining them to better portray his vast inner world and active imagination, he really appreciates the creative freedom and adaptability that come with drawing.
“I like to mix various tools and elements: pencils, stencils, watercolor, carioca, stickers, and chalk. I don’t use them all at once, but combine two or three at a time,” Thomas confesses and encourages other children to be open when it comes to art and to experiment with different media.

Thomas finds value in both the act of creation and the feeling he experiences when viewing a completed drawing. He is pleased with his work, proud of himself, and even a little taken aback by how much inspiration and details he was able to include into it.
“After I finish a drawing I’m proud of, I feel happy. I look at it and I am surprised that I was so inspired to introduce all kinds of elements and details”, he says and advises other young people who wish to experience this feeling as well and start drawing, to simply observe their thoughts, the world around them and to try to recreate in drawings the beauty of nature and people.

Thomas’s Advice for Young Aspiring Artists
“I would advise others to travel as often as possible, to observe life in nature and in the city, to try to reproduce landscapes from nature or portraits of people and animals,” he adds.
Through his art, Thomas hopes to inspire others to befriend the environment, value the beauty and ingenuity that nature holds, and celebrate life in general. He thinks that the ability of art to inspire and unite people goes beyond merely being a wonderful means of self-expression. “The message conveyed in my drawings is of befriending the environment, of integration in nature, of the free spirit, of understanding the space in which we live, and of celebrating life in general,” he confesses.

Thomas’s artistic adventures show us that drawing can be both a powerful instrument for self-expression and discovery, as well as a source of joy and happiness.
