The Interview

At what age did you begin to engage with art, and what were your initial experiences like?

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: I started painting for the first time when I was two years old with my mother’s guidance. She would paint animals while reciting poetry to me, sparking my interest in painting. So I started to paint little by little.

What aspects of drawing and painting do you find most fulfilling or enjoyable?

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: I love that painting allows me to bring to life anything that I like or that springs to my mind. It’s a way for me to express my thoughts and show my feelings.

Among various artistic mediums like acrylics, watercolors, and charcoal, which one do you like the most, and what draws you to it?

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: I enjoy experimenting with various techniques and most of my paintings are a combination of techniques. I have a deep love for all painting tools and the art itself.

Your paintings are vibrant and colorful. Could you tell us about your favorite colors to use in your art and the reasons behind these choices?

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: Yes, my paintings are full of color. I frequently use purple, yellow, and green because I find purple beautiful, and yellow and green enhance the beauty of my artwork.

Could you describe the process you go through when creating a piece of art? Do you have any particular routines or practices that help you concentrate?

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: My process begins with researching the subject I wish to paint, followed by sketching my ideas on a piece of paper. I prefer to sit alone, writing down any thoughts that come to mind about my subject. Finally, when I have a clear image in my mind, I start painting my design.

Who are the artists or individuals that inspire your artwork the most? Where else do you find your creative inspiration?

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: I’m inspired by great artists like Izabela Kowalska Wyszorek and Frida Kahlo, who are my favorite artists. Additionally, animation, storybooks, nature, and my imagination are rich sources of inspiration for me.

How do you keep your imagination vibrant and active?

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: I study the works of great painters and am particularly drawn to Izabela Kowalska Wizwerk’s work. I just love her paintings! I also turn my drawings into comics and write short stories and illustrate them. Moreover, I am very fond of ponies. I am very fond of the concept of flying as well. 

Of all the artworks you’ve created, which one holds a special place for you, and why does it stand out?

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: My painting of Iran and Haft Sin is a favorite because it reflects my Iranian heritage. I’m proud of my achievements in various national and international competitions, and my participation in numerous exhibitions. 

For example, winning first place in a banknote design competition organized by the Money Museum (Iran, 2022), or having my painting in the top 100 works of the 5th Indonesia Semarang International Exhibition (2022). My artwork was also selected for the international tourism competition of Turkey and published in their catalog (2021). 

And, of course, I participated in the drawing competitions organized by 4TinyHands, “Mother Earth” and “Celebrating the Animal Kingdom”.

Have you ever produced a work of art that tells a story? Tell us about it!

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: Many of my paintings narrate stories. For example, the story of Adam and Eve, or the Iranian myth about the battle of Tishtar (the rain angel) and Apush (the demon of drought). I drew Tishtar like a girl with three shapes in her hair: a boy, a bull, and a white horse. I also draw Anahita (meaning pure), which is the guardian angel of water. In the past, in some cities of Iran, they built places for Anahita so that they always remember that they should take care of water as a natural heritage. I also created a piece in memory of Pirouz, an Iranian cheetah and the son of “Iran” and “Firoz”, who became the symbol of the Asian cheetah.

What has been the most challenging subject or theme for you to capture in your art, and how did you approach this challenge?

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: Drawing the map of Iran was challenging, but with practice, I mastered it. My advice to others and to my friends is to not get discouraged easily. But instead to persevere and practice to achieve their best.

What emotional impact do you hope your art has on viewers? Is there any message you want to share through your art?

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: I hope my art informs and positively influences my peers, promoting conservation, good behavior, peace, friendship, love, and hope.

In your view, what role can art play in inspiring joy, hope, and positivity? How has art influenced your own life in this regard?

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: Art has brought calmness and happiness to my life, allowing me to express and soothe my emotions. I can show my feelings, like sadness and happiness, and I calm down while painting. 

What advice would you give to young aspiring artists who are exploring their artistic paths and expressions?

Nilya Sadat Mirrezaie: I advise young artists to seek guidance from elders and mentors and to reflect on their dreams and goals. I believe that art adds color to life and helps in personal development.
